The Ban on R22 Refrigerant
R-22 Refrigerant Phasing Out
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that R-22 refrigerant (also known as the brand FREON®), a common refrigerant for residential heat pumps and air conditioning systems, is not environmentally-friendly. The EPA is regulating the production and use of refrigerants and in the future all air conditioning and heat pump refrigerants that contain chlorine will be eliminated.
How does this affect you?
If you currently have a heating and cooling system that uses R-22 refrigerant, you don’t need to panic or run out to purchase a new system. Production of R-22 refrigerant is winding down, and while the cost will go up, production will continue until 2020. After that time recycled refrigerants should be accessible for a while.
Because of this change, Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Columbus offers R410A, a more environmentally friendly solution for refrigerants which will reduce the damage to the ozone layer. Almost half of home energy costs may go toward heating and cooling the home.
